Ten schools in the Pasadena Unified School District reopened Thursday for the first time since the deadly Eaton Fire broke out more than two weeks ago.

The fire damaged or destroyed thousands of structures in Altadena and Pasadena, including five of PUSD’s 24 school campuses.

However, 3,400 students were back in the classroom on Thursday, with PUSD President Jennifer Hall Lee hoping to get all 14,000 back by the end of the month.

Hall Lee told KNX News’ Craig Figener that she’s confident the fire-damaged schools will be rebuilt.

“Altadena is a unique place,” she told KNX News’ Craig Fiegener. “I'm an Altadenan. I was displaced. I have 51 friends and acquaintances who've lost their homes. The PUSD family is tight and committed to Pasadena Unified School District.”

The schools have counselors on campus to help students and staffers process their emotions about the disaster.
