LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The California Department of Justice announced Tuesday that a five-day sweep to remove illegal firearms in Los Angeles County resulted in the arrest of 13 people and seizure of 114 weapons.

The seizures included assault weapons, ghost guns, handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Authorities also reported seizing more than 49,000 rounds of ammunition and 87 high-capacity magazines.

The sweep was conducted in coordination with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, the L.A. County Probation Department, and officers from the Azusa, L.A., Pasadena, and Pomona police departments.

The sweep targeted suspects in 51 cities countywide allegedly prohibited from possessing firearms under the state’s Armed and Prohibited Persons System.

"California's Armed and Prohibited Persons System is a critical tool that makes the work of cracking down on illegal gun ownership and possession possible," said California Attorney General Rob Bonta on Tuesday. “Collaborative efforts like these increase our success in taking guns out of potentially dangerous hands, reducing gun violence, and keeping our neighborhoods safe.”

The AAPS database records individuals who lawfully purchased firearms but later became prohibited from owning or possessing them — generally those convicted of a felony or violent misdemeanor, placed under a domestic violence-related restraining order, or suffer from serious mental illness.
