14-year-old boy killed in Boyle Heights shooting identified

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A 14-year-old boy who was fatally shot in Boyle Heights was identified Monday, and the investigation into his death continued.

The shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. Sunday at First and Pecan streets, next to the Hollywood (101) Freeway, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Mike Lopez.


The teenage victim, Steve Velez of Los Angeles, died at the scene, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner reported.

Two male suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, Lopez said. The shooting was believed gang related.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at 7:53 p.m. shutting down the First Street off-ramp from the southbound Hollywood Freeway for the crime scene investigation.

Anyone with information on the crime was urged to call 877-LAPD-247.
