A $1.50 hot dog and reasonable rent seems like a dream pairing. A dream pairing soon to become a reality here in Los Angeles.
A combination Costco and affordable housing complex broke ground in South L.A. on Wednesday.
The 5053 Coliseum project in Baldwin Village includes 800 units, 184 of which will be dedicated to low-income households. It will also have a fitness center, community room, and a rooftop garden with a pool, according to Jordan Brill with Thrive Living.
“We spent a lot of time in this community, speaking to the local residents trying to understand what they really wanted to see, and I think we put together a package of housing and retail that everybody not only needs but everybody can be proud of,” Brill told KNX News’ Karen Adams.

It’s the first project in L.A. to receive approval under the Affordable Housing and High Road Jobs Act, which streamlines the approval process for certain housing and mixed-use projects. It’s also the first apartment complex in the nation to be anchored by a Costco.
