Two people, including a Baldwin Park police officer, were fatally shot on Saturday night.

The suspect was also shot. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition, deputies said.

On Monday, the suspect was identified as 22-year-old Eduardo Roberto Medina-Berumen. He was booked on suspicion of two counts of murder. Deputies say he is "currently in stable condition at a local hospital pending transfer to a jail facility."

On May 31, officers responded to a report of a man with a rifle in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue at 7:12 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

When officers arrived, they found a man dead on the front lawn.

According to the sheriff’s department, when officers met with the suspect, “an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

Two officers were taken to a local hospital where one of the officers, identified as Samuel Riveros, was pronounced dead. The second officer, identified as Anthony Pimentel, was injured but released from the hospital on Sunday morning, according to the Baldwin Park Police Departement.

Officials said 35-year-old Riveros has been with the department since 2016.

“A proud UC Irvine graduate, Officer Samuel Riveros was known not only for his tactical skills and professionalism, but for his love of snowboarding and his unwavering loyalty to the Los Angeles Dodgers,” a statement by the police department read. “His legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the example he set.”

Isabella, who lives on the next block over, told KNX News’ Emily Valdez she heard the shooting.

“I thought it was a gun, and then my boyfriend was like, ‘No, it sounds like fireworks,’” she recalled. “It didn't sound like a gun at first.”

Another woman said her husband saw the suspect firing shots.

“My husband was the one that witnessed the guy actually shooting back and forth,” she told Valdez. “He was shooting towards Los Angeles Street and my husband said the it was a rifle type gun with the telescope, so he was standing against this walls and just peeking.”

A memorial for Riveros was created outside the Baldwin Park Police Department on Monday. George Silva, who runs an AC repair business in Baldwin Park, told KNX News’ Jon Baird he would see Riveros a lot.

“I would see him at least two or three times a day,” he said. “I run my business in the city, and driving around town, and you just see the same people every day. So, I just had to come and put down my five minutes of respect.”

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
