2 injured in Long Beach oil rig collapse

Two people were injured after an oil rig collapsed in Long Beach Monday afternoon.

The collapse occurred at approximately 2 PM when the oil derrick gave way in a pumping unit area, dragging other material down on top of it.

According to the Long Beach Fire Department, one worker, who fell 50 feet, was freed from the wreckage by crew members, and rushed to the hospital, where he is said to be in stable condition.

The other worker suffered only minor injuries.

Firefighters said a safety cable prevented significant injuries.

The cause of the accident remains unknown, and an ongoing investigation continued through Monday evening.
