People in two Long Beach neighborhoods will soon be out of a grocery store because Kroger doesn’t want to pay some of its workers $4 more an hour.
Long Beach has a new ordinance mandating some grocery workers get hero pay during the pandemic. Kroger's response is to close two of its eight Long Beach stores.
This man shops at one, the Food4Less, on E. South Street.
"It's sad that this is the world we live in but it shouldn't be like this," he says.
The other store closing is the Ralphs on Los Coyotes Diagonal. Shoppers reporter Emily Valdez spoke with think that it comes down to one thing.
"They have made billions of dollars during this pandemic. They have been the base of everything - the grocery stores have been open throughout the whole thing. They have made a lot of money. That is definitely something they should reconsider why cause the American people to struggle more?" asked one woman.
Both stores close their door for good on April 17th.
