A 26-year-old man was behind bars without bail Friday and facing a murder charge stemming from the discovery of an 18-year-old woman's body near a Pico Rivera freeway ramp.

Marvell Beroit, of Hawthorne, was charged Thursday with murder, according to court records. California Highway Patrol officials said he was arrested Oct. 23 in connection with the death of the woman, identified as Emily Bortee.

Bortee's body was found Oct. 16 in a brush area alongside the Rose Hills Road on-ramp to the northbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials said an "extensive investigation" led the agency to arrest Beroit, but no other details were provided. The county Medical Examiner's Office still lists her cause of death as deferred.
