4.9 magnitude earthquake hits near Barstow, felt in L.A.

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck near Barstow at 1:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

The quake was centered 13.7 miles northeast of Barstow, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Within five minutes of the initial earthquake, two aftershocks were reported at magnitudes 3.5 and 2.8.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, there were no initial reports of any damage or injuries.

According to the USGS “Did You Feel It” tracker, the shaker was felt as far west as Santa Monica and as far east as the Coachella Valley.

A KNX News caller who spoke with Rob Archer said that a Barstow resident felt a “sharp and intense” rocking and heard a roar that she compared to the sound of a freight train.
