About 500 Marines and sailors based at Camp Pendleton in northern San Diego County are being deployed to areas along the border with Mexico as part of President Donald Trump's crackdown on immigration.
1,000 Army soldiers from other military bases are also being sent to the border after Trump’s inauguration day declaration of emergency, which characterized immigration from Mexico as an “assault on the American people.”
The service members are expected to focus on helping border officers reinforce facilities and barriers along Mexico's borders with California and Texas. So far, there’s no word of any plans for the troops to perform a law enforcement role, but Trump hasn’t ruled that idea out, despite strong objections by his critics.
