A massive animal rescue operation was underway in the Lake Hughes area on Friday morning.

An estimated 700 dogs and cats were rescued from a property in the 46000 block of 226th Street West, according to the L.A. County Department of Animal Care and Control. Officials say a search warrant was served for “violation of animal welfare laws.”

“This is the largest number of dogs and cats that DACC has ever seized and may be the largest case ever in the United States,” a social media post by the L.A. County Department of Animal Care and Control read.

The department said that more than 70 animal care and control staff were on scene and that there was assistance from spcaLA, the Pasadena Humane Society, and Kern County Animal Services.
