9 injured after car crashes into Riverside County middle school

PERRIS, Calif. (KNX) — Nine people were injured Wednesday when a car crashed into a building at Tomas Rivera Middle School in Perris. None of the injured parties were children, according to reports.

The collision was reported shortly after 1 p.m. in the 21600 block of Martin Street, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The Val Verde Unified School District Police Department issued a shelter in place warning for students and staff. No students were in the impacted classroom at the time of the crash, but several staff members were in the building and were subsequently injured.

“The driver crashed into the building, causing injuries to the victims,” said Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. Edward Soto on Wednesday. “We do not know the circumstances but the driver is cooperating with the investigators.”

The driver's identity has not yet been released, but was reported to be among the injured.

Three other victims suffered moderate injuries, according to the fire department; five suffered minor injuries.

California High Patrol has taken over the investigation. No arrests have been made. Alcohol and drugs were not believed to be a factor in the crash.
