A YouTuber rode 40 of L.A.’s 46 bus systems. Here’s how it went

Miles Taylor, operator of the YouTube channel Miles in Transit, set off on an ambitious mission to ride every single bus system in Los Angeles County in the span of one weekend. It didn’t go quite as expected.

“I think I had to adjust my expectations pretty early on, and they weren’t that high to begin with, but I learned that the floor of bad transit could go a lot lower than I thought it could,” Taylor told KNX News.

Let’s start with the good: L.A. Metro. Taylor called it “the GOAT in the region,” praising its light rails and long, frequent bus routes. But some of the county’s smaller systems are, well…a nightmare.

“A lot of these systems are kind of odd little municipal loops that operate within these kind of small towns and don't really go anywhere else, don't really run frequently, don't have trackers, they just sort of do their own thing, and they're very difficult to ride,” Taylor said.

Take, for instance, Cudahy Area Rapid Transit – a “snake-like bus route” that services almost every street in the 1.2-square-mile city and, at least in Taylor’s experience, doesn’t hit any of them on time.

“There’s no tracker, there’s no way to know when the bus is coming, and I stood out there for probably half an hour,” he said.

Taylor said that some of the resources being spent on each municipality’s individual transit systems could be better spent on adding L.A. Metro routes through the towns.
