A community leader is calling on the Culver City Unified School District to address rampant bullying of primarily Black students, which multiple complaints suggest is happening in its schools.

L.A. Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson says bullying of Black students has been a significant problem in the school district for some time now.

"We have gotten so many complaints over the last year from Black parents, caregivers, or students within the Culver City Unified School District at different schools about bullying," Hutchinson told KNX News' Emily Valdez.

Hutchinson said what brought the issue to a head was an issue he had recently been made aware of involving a young girl. "I'm not at liberty to give her name because she's only 7 years old," he said, but "An African American student at one of the schools in Culver City essentially was the target of bullying. Her mother objected, went to school officials, and tried to get some rectification of the issue."

According to Hutchinson, the school's lack of response pushed the mother to contact his organization. "So we felt it important really to call upon the school district to take action and take action now," he said.

Hutchinson wants to speak with the superintendent and have the school set up an emergency task force to address the alleged bullying.

KNX News has reached out to the Culver City Superintendent for comment and is awaiting a response.
