As thousands of residents and families look for places to stay following the destructive wildfires in Southern California, actor Chad Lowe is warning people to be aware of rental price gouging.
“So 10% above the asking price can be offered, but during a declaration of a natural disaster or a national emergency anything beyond that is considered price gouging,” he said. “And what I personally have run into - my wife and our three daughters lost our home in the Palisades and we have found multiple occasions where the listing price that's on the MLS is bumped up to three to $4,000.”
He added that there have been situations where he’s had owners of properties say “make your best offer.”
“I’m gonna assume those people don’t know what they’re doing is illegal, but if you accept more than 10% above, you are breaking the law and that is price gouging,” he said.
Lowe said he’s spoken to L.A. County District Nathan Hochman about the price gouging.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has warned that if someone engages in price gouging, they're breaking the law and they will be held accountable.
