United States Air Force veteran Luke Oakley completed a cross-country electric unicycle ride on Monday. It started at Myrtle Beach, SC, seven weeks ago and ended at Venice Beach by the Santa Monica Pier.
His goal? Raise awareness for a project near to his heart and make some new friends along the way.
Oakley told KNX News reporter Pete Demetriou, the trip started as a journey of self-discovery, and along the way, he "figured, why not make it part of something a lot bigger than myself?"
So, he decided to raise awareness and some money for the Wounded Warriors Project, an organization with a mission to "foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation's history."
As of his arrival in Santa Monica, Oakley has raised about $1,700 on his gofundme.
During the last leg of his trip into L.A., he was forced to ride along the I-15 - not the most unicycle-friendly stretch of road.
At one point, Oakley was stopped by CHP, who he said, "Were really nice. They actually gave me an escort for a little bit, and the traffic was fine and I made it through safe and sound."
Once he saw the signs for the Santa Monica Pier, Oakley said he felt a sense of relief and a major sense of accomplishment.
When asked how he plans on getting home, Oakley said after a much-needed massage he's, "hoping for a train or maybe even rent a car."
During his approximately 3,000 mile journey across the U.S., Oakley received help from over 20 military families who gave him housing and charged his unicycle.
