A winter storm is expected to reach Southern California late Friday afternoon, but Los Angeles first responders think the effects from this storm will be less intense than the previous ones.

The rainfall isn’t expected to reach rates of a quarter to half an inch per hour, which can cause landslides or flooding. Rather, the light rain will be spread out over a 24-hour period from Friday to Saturday evenings.

Still, Lisette Guzman with the L.A. County Department of Public Works told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou that Malibu Canyon Road will be closed as a precaution.

“Our engineers decided to shut that down starting today, Friday at 7 p.m. through the weekend,” she said. “I'm hoping to reopen by Monday morning, only so that they could continue to monitor those slopes and the condition of that hillside.”

Guzman said there are no other road closures planned, but road maintenance crews will be keeping an eye out throughout the weekend.

The city won’t be pre-deploying any additional fire units or rescue teams, but fire stations in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Beverly Crest, and other areas that suffered previous flood damage will have more than 20 tons of sand on hand if sandbagging is needed.
