An investigation of an explosion at an apartment in West Rancho Dominguez near Compton that caused its residents to be evacuated in underway.

The explosion occurred at around 9:42 p.m. Thursday near 13524 S. Avalon Blvd. east of East 135th Street, NBC 4 reported.
According to reports from the scene, witnesses reported hearing a large boom that shook the entire complex before flames and smoke were seen coming from a unit.
A hazmat team was called to the scene and is investigating the cause of the explosion.
