Are cocktails healthier in New York compared to L.A.?

LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Cocktails are becoming increasingly popular, and according to Beth Nydick, it’s in part thanks to social media.

“I think for a long time cocktails like young people thought cocktails were for the older set and now cocktails are really accessible to anybody because on social media you see all these gorgeous photos of amazing mixologists and bartenders making art and not just cocktails,” she explained to KNX In Depth.

“…(A)nd they're accessible because you can look at a photograph on Instagram and then go to the market and buy some lime and some mint and make your own beautiful cocktail and then put it on your social media.”

In addition to social media, Nydick, who co-wrote Clean Cocktails: Righteous Recipes for the Modern Mixologist, said today’s cocktail is also about health, especially during the early days of the Coronavirus lockdown.

“..(W)hat I found in cocktails today is really about health because it's really being connected to that because we were able to spend so much time focused on ourselves that people want healthier cocktail,” she said.

Nydick said she notices New York cocktails contain healthier ingredients.

“They don't have they don't have as much simple syrup,” she noted. “They’re using honey syrup, date syrup, coconut sugar. They're using different alternatives to make it healthier because their customers don't want to have the chemicals in their body or those straight sugars as much anymore.”
