Responding officers were told the suspect, 50-year-old Gustavo Ramirez, was armed with a firearm and a glass bottle, police said.
The officer who fatally shot Ramirez was identified as Miguel Suarez.
Officers with the Mission Community Police Station were sent at approximately 5:20 p.m. Wednesday to the intersection of Parthenia Street and Orion Avenue regarding an assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
"As an airship arrived overhead, they directed officers to the area of Orion Avenue and Parthenia Street, where the suspect was observed," according to the LAPD. "Upon contact, the officers attempted to gain Ramirez's compliance by issuing verbal commands. Ramirez failed to comply, pointed a handgun at the officers, and an officer-involved shooting occurred."
Ramirez was taken to a hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel, but he did not survive.
No officers or civilians were injured.
"The handgun used by Ramirez was later determined to be a black plastic replica," which was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence, police said.
Personnel from the LAPD's Force Investigation Division and representatives from the California Department of Justice responded to the scene and assumed investigative responsibility.
