A rally was held outside the Turkish consulate in Beverly Hills on Thursday to commemorate Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day.

Those who attended the rally demanded that attention be paid not just to the Armenian genocide in 1915 and 1922, but also to the ongoing war.

Beatrice Mena explained to KNX News’ Emily Valdez why it was important for her to attend.

“My grandfather's family had to escape from the Armenian genocide, and in an attempt to do so, he lost two of his sisters on the way of trying to escape,” she said. “My grandfather was born in Greece, and so the diaspora is very strong. It's very spread apart.”

Helen, another attendee, said she is a survivor of the generation that was massacred in Baku.

“I don't know where humanity is going by ignoring all these crimes,” she said.

Los Angeles is home to the largest Armenian population outside of Armenia. Schools in L.A. and Glendale were closed in observance.
