Arraignment is due to be held today for a man accused of unprovoked attacks on two women, including a young mom who was repeatedly punched at a gas station in Gardena.
Video of that assault, which has been widely viewed, is what Sheriff's Detective Keegan McInnis says prompted the suspect's mom to turn him in.
"She turned on the news and immediately recognized him, recognized his vehicle and his behavior," says McInnis.
McInnis says 37-year-old Antoine Rainey, who's on parole for assault, was booked on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, meaning his fists, for the May 30 attack on a 25-year-oldwoman at a Sinclair gas station at Rosecrans and Avalon and a similar attack the day before.
He says Rainey stopped at the same intersection, walked over to the car behind him, opened the door and starting hitting the 63-year-old driver.
McInnis says during an interview, Rainey "did acknowledge both incidents" and adds this should be a "pretty open-and-shut case."
He's not saying anything publicly about a possible motive but says Rainey "definitely" suffers from mental illness.
