An arrest was made in connection to a July hit-and-run that left a Wilmington man dead, the Los Angeles Police Department announced on Wednesday.

Rachel Gutierrez was arrested in the death of Juan Jose Areyan, police said.

During the press conference, Detective Ryan Moreno revealed Gutierrez has a long criminal history.

“She has, I believe, eight felony arrests and eight felony convictions along with seven misdemeanor arrests and seven misdemeanor convictions,” he said. “Her arrest stems from anything from burglary, domestic violence witness intimidation, (and) several narcotics arrests.”

Areyan was killed on the night of July 3rd on Fries Avenue near G Street. Surveillance footage showed Areyan setting something down on the center divider lane when a car slammed into him, causing him to be thrown 121 feet, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Areyan’s oldest son, Daniel, called him “one of the hardest working men in the world.”

“The second he had me, he turned his life around and worked 20 years to make sure I always had food, a house, everything,” he said.

If Gutierrez is convicted, she could face more than 20 years in prison.
