Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo, who’s also currently running to unseat Kevin de Leόn on Los Angeles City Council, was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of DUI.
Sheriff’s records show Carrillo was arrested by LAPD officers at 1:35 a.m. and booked on an unspecified misdemeanor charge. According to Politico, the sheriff’s department refused to share additional details until Carrillo’s office releases a statement.
KNX News’ Craig Fiegener learned that Carrillo allegedly crashed into two parked vehicles while driving under the influence. There were no injuries.
Carrillo, who represents parts of northeastern and East Los Angeles in the State Assembly, is one of several candidates running against the disgraced de Leόn, the only councilmember involved in last year’s leaked racist recording who is still at City Hall. Assemblymember Miguel Santiago and tenant’s rights lawyer Ysabel Jurado are also in the race.
"As a public servant, I am aware that I must adhere to a higher standard that demands personal accountability for my conduct and I accept responsibility for my actions," Carrillo said in a statement acknowledging the incident. "I sincerely apologize to my family, constituents, colleagues and staff for any actions of mine that have fallen short of that expectation. I intend to seek the necessary help and support. As I do so, I remain dedicated to my family, my constituents and the community that I grew-up in and am proud to represent.”
