LOS ANGELES (KNX) — At least 37,000 Los Angeles Unified School District students have not yet complied with the district’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate as the Jan. 10 deadline looms.
As of Tuesday, 84.86% of students are in compliance with the vaccination requirement, according to an LAUSD spokesperson. This comes after the district confirmed that nearly 500 employees were fired due to non-compliance with the requirement.

Unvaccinated students are now at risk of having their education disrupted because there’s no longer enough time for those who have not gotten their first shot to be fully vaccinated by the deadline.
Unvaccinated students could be barred from in-school attendance and forced into the district’s independent study program, or will have to leave the L.A. public school system.
The district has yet to address what their plan is for the thousands of students who remain unvaccinated and there hasn’t been any mention of pushing back the deadline or allowing partially vaccinated students to attend classes.
But LAUSD board member Jackie Goldberg said they are preparing for “a variety of eventualities so that whatever the outcome is, we will be prepared to have a second semester that is rigorous and available for everyone.”
LAUSD continues to provide access to vaccines for employees and eligible students as both educators and families wait to see what the district’s plans are to serve students who fail to meet the deadline.
