On Thursday, Austin Beutner announced he’s dropping out of the race for mayor of Los Angeles, citing that he needs to be with his family a month after the death of his daughter.

“A successful campaign, and more importantly the job Mayor, requires someone who is committed 24/7 to the job,” his statement on social media read. “Family has always come first for me. That is where I need to be at this time.”

His daughter, Emily, passed away last month.

Beutner, who previously served as LAUSD superintendent, announced his campaign for mayor in October 2025.
