Azusa police officers received information about a stolen vehicle in the area. After finding the vehicle, police saw two suspects — a male and female — near the vehicle.

Officers attempted to make contact with the pair when the male suspect fled on foot, prompting the officers to chase him, according to Deputy Miguel Meza.

Following a short foot pursuit, officers attempted to detain the man and a struggle ensued, Meza said.

During the struggle, the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired at the officers, prompting one of them to return fire, according to Meza.

One of the officers was struck in his lower body and taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect was struck multiple times by the gunfire and was treated by paramedics, but died at the scene, authorities said. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The suspect was described as white, between 25 to 30 years of age. The female suspect was detained near the location, authorities said.

The shooting remains under investigation as sheriff’s detectives conduct interviews and process evidence, according to Meza.
