On Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli announced the creation of a new task force to investigate where the more than $24 billion spent to address the homeless crisis in California went.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass told KNX News’ Craig Fiegener she’s concerned Essayli could “go on a fishing expedition” that gets city officials off mission.
“We know the system is broken. This is nothing new,” she said. “The point is to fix the system, to transform the system. But having said that, this is going to be a complete distraction and disruption, and it's going to sow doubt amongst the public. And if we're ever going to get people off the street, we need to stay focused on that mission, and we absolutely need to transform the system.”
She added that she’s also concerned that the new U.S. Attorney could target individuals who "don't deserve to be treated like criminals."
