LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Los Angeles is paying tribute to actress Betty White days before her 100th birthday.
White, who died Dec. 31, was honored with a mural on Melrose Avenue. Artist Corie Mattie painted the mural, according to NBC 4.
The mural depicts the ‘Golden Girls’ star on a yellow background along with the words “Be More Like Betty.”
A QR code on the corner of the mural takes people to the website for Wagmor Pets, a dog rescue.
White’s animal rights activism has been highlighted since her death and a social media challenge, #BettyWhiteChallenge, encourages people to donate to local animal shelters in honor of White’s birthday on Jan. 17.
In addition to the mural, the Los Angeles Zoo established a memorial garden in her honor on Wednesday. The garden, located in an area named after White’s late husband, Allen Ludden, allows visitors to leave messages and pictures honoring White.
“After her passing, there has been an outpouring of love for Betty with tributes from around the globe, so we think honoring her at Ludden Plaza, a place very special to her, would serve as the perfect backdrop to this public memorial,” Tom Jacobson, president of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, told CBS L.A.
“We also want to reflect on her life at the L.A. Zoo by sharing some more intimate moments of Betty with our animals and staff as well as her indelible contributions.”
The zoo also established “Betty’s L.A. Zoo Tour”, which highlights White’s contributions to the zoo.
The memorial will be up until the end of the month.
