LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A person was fatally struck Tuesday by a hit-and-run driver who dragged the victim's body for nearly a mile in the southeast Los Angeles area.

Officers went to the area of South Broadway and West 117th Street at about 9:15 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The fatally injured person, described only as a male, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

He was not immediately identified.

According to police, the victim -- who was on a bicycle -- was initially struck nearly a mile to the north, near Broadway and Imperial Highway, and his body was trapped beneath the vehicle and dragged to the intersection where he was found.

"How do you not know you have something under your car?" one witness told KTLA5 at the scene.

The hit-and-run vehicle was described as an older-model white and blue Chevrolet van, and the driver described only as a man with long silver or salt-and-pepper hair.

There were some initial reports that the victim may have been intentionally struck, but police could not immediately confirm those reports.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call 877-LAPD-247.

The city of Los Angeles has a standing $50,000 reward offer for information that leads to a conviction in a fatal hit-and-run.
