LAS VEGAS (KNX) — The governors of California and Nevada have announced a plan to relieve traffic congestion on Interstate 15 at the border of the two states.

In a joint statement released Sunday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak said the state governments would work together to make the shoulder of Interstate 15 about five miles south of the Nevada border into a third lane during peak drive-time hours.

According to The Las Vegas Journal, the project will cost about $12 million. But Newsom assured money already in state coffers would be used to complete the project, with an estimated completion date of summer of 2022.

Newsom warned the expansion of Interstate 15 was only a temporary solution, however — Sacramento and Carson City would need to continue to work together to identify a more permanent fix.
