A new report by U.S. News & World Report has ranked California the 37th-best state in the U.S.

Researchers behind the report said the rankings were calculated based on eight categories.

“In calculating the rankings, each of the eight categories was assigned weights based on the average of three years of data from recent national surveys that asked nearly 70,000 people total to prioritize each subject in their state,” researchers said.

The eight categories were health care, education, economy, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, crime and corrections, and natural environment.

California's highest ranking was in health care where it received a six. The state ranked 34 in crime and corrections, 34 in economy, 23 in education, 42 in fiscal stability, 32 in infrastructure, 33 in natural environment, and 50 in opportunity.

Utah was ranked the best state overall.
