When it came to cities with the most dog bite attacks, Los Angeles ranked four with 44 reported dog bites. Meanwhile, San Diego tied with Columbus, Ohio for the 11th spot with 31 reported bites.

As a whole, over 5,400 postal employees in the U.S. were attacked by dogs. It was also revealed that most of the attacks that were reported by postal carrier came from dogs whose owners continuously said, “My dog won’t bite.”

“…[W]hile it’s a dog’s natural instinct to protect their family and home, we ask all customers to act responsibly by taking safety precautions with their dogs while the mail is being delivered,” said USPS Employee Safety and Health Awareness Manager Leeann Theriault.

“When a carrier comes to the residence, keep the dog inside the house and away from the door — or behind a fence on a leash — to avoid an attack.”

U.S. Postal Service officials said that although postal carriers are “trained to stand their ground”, dog owners are asked to secure their dog by keeping them inside the home or behind a gate or keeping the dog on a leash.
