LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The Los Angeles Police Department was investigating what was believed to be an attempted smash-and-grab robbery attempt at the Westfield Topanga & The Village shopping mall in Canoga Park on Friday night.

The incident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. in the 6600 block of Topanga Canyon Boulevard. Police responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to an LAPD spokesperson.

Five masked suspects emerged from a gray-colored vehicle and proceeded to Ice Brothers, a custom jewelry store located in the mall. There, they sprayed what police believe may have been bear or pepper spray on store employees.

As one suspect attempted to use a baseball bat to smash open a display case, one of the store's owners pulled out and brandished a gun, police said.

Police confirmed the owner fired one shot, which effectively scared off the assailants. No injuries or theft of property was reported.

An investigation remains ongoing and the suspects remain at large.
