Cedars-Sinai nurses to strike starting Christmas Eve

Registered nurses at Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital will begin a three-day strike on Sunday.

This marks the second time the RNs have gone on strike since contract negotiations between the hospital and the California Nurses Association began in February.

“We're striking during the holidays, unfortunately, because Cedar-Sinai continues to request that we waive our rights to bargain over important benefits that affect our lives,” bargaining team member Sophia Sabido told KNX News’ Margaret Carrero.

Sabido said the hospital’s management is asking the union to give up its legal right to bargain for benefits like sick days and vacation time.

In a statement, Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital said they respect the nurses’ right to strike, but they strongly believe these kinds of activities distract from important work that can be done only through constructive discussions at the bargaining table.

A federal mediator will be brought in for the next bargaining session in January.
