As pressure mounts on President Joe Biden to drop his re-election campaign, reaction among Democratic lawmakers has been mixed.
After a “dour” and “sad” caucus meeting on Tuesday, a seventh House Democrat publicly called on Biden to drop out. Others anonymously told Axios that the mood was “pretty much unanimous” that the president should step aside, and that his remaining in the race “sucks for our country.”
But Rep. Nanette Barragán offered a rosier assessment, telling KNX News Chief Correspondent Charles Feldman, “I stand with the president.”
“I’ve worked closely with the president. I've seen him many times, and if you take a look at those accomplishments and the things he's doing, some of them were just very recently – take a look at the protections he provided to the spouses of U.S. citizens that are noncitizens,” said Barragán, who chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. “I would not support the president if I didn't think he could win or if I didn't think he could do the job.”
Barragán described Tuesday’s meeting as a “listening session” for congress members to talk about what they’re hearing in their districts.
“It was a family conversation, and with any family conversation, there's gonna be folks who disagree or have a different perspective,” she said. “But for us, it's about making sure we do everything we can to get the House back, to have that majority, to have a backstop.”
As for why Biden is doing poorly with Hispanic voters, Barragán said “we clearly have work to do,” adding that people in her district “seem to respond very positively” when told about what Biden has done for the Latino community.
