If you’re planning a road trip for the holiday weekend, get ready to share the road with a lot of drivers – and a lot of patrol cars.

The Auto Club estimates as many as 8.5 million Californians will be on the road in the next few days. From Friday evening through Monday at midnight, the California Highway Patrol will be out in force, looking to reduce speeding and unsafe driving.

With a few exceptions, every available CHP officer throughout the state will be on patrol during the 78-hour Maximum Enforcement Period, Officer April Elliot told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou.

“We’re primarily focused on speed, but we’re looking for those primary collision factors – speed, we’re trying to get those drunk drivers off the road, and any kind of unsafe driving,” she said.

Elliot said they’ll be on the lookout for dangerous moves like tailgating and zipping in and out of lanes. Don’t want to close out the year with a traffic citation? Drive carefully.
