The 36-year-old man from Claremont was arrested for animal cruelty after witnesses saw him throwing rocks at ducks and hitting the bird, which a second person later pulled from the water and killed to end its suffering.
The egret, known to many as Arthur, was well-known to visitors and had become a local favorite.
Egrets, which were once endangered, are protected by law, and it's illegal to harm or kill them. Police are investigating the incident.
