Clean up after warehouse fire in Boyle Heights brings new problems

Clean up after warehouse fire in Boyle Heights brings new problems

While the fire inside the Lineage warehouse in Boyle Heights has been knocked down and the clean-up process is underway, there are new problems for residents in the area.

According to multiple reports, those problems include awful smells and rats.

Patricia, whose mother lives north of the warehouse, told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou that even with the stench, she can smell some smoke.

“It does still smell like some smoke on and off,” she said. “Not some good smell, ugly smell, probably all that food that's going bad. So yeah, but like I said, it depends on how the wind shifts. It depends on the smell that we get.”

Rats are also a concern due to the nearly 85 million pounds of frozen and imported food, including fish, that were stored in the building.

Lineage, the operator of the facility, has already hired a contractor and said they already have plans for pest control and odor control. That's expected to start once the property is officially turned back over to its operators.

A mobile health clinic will also be available for residents worried about exposure.
