Community groups rallied outside the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting Wednesday morning, asking the supervisors to think about “care not cages” as they review the proposed 2024-25 county budget.
KNX News’ Karen Adams reports that the Reimagine L.A. Coalition wants the county supervisors to reduce spending on law enforcement and use the money to invest in the community.
“They need to consider this an emergency,” Janet Asante said. “We know that our communities are suffering every single day that they don't fund care first … and sometimes that means that they die because they end up in jail, and those are deadly facilities.”

The coalition demanded the county follow through on its 2021 motion to close Men’s Central Jail and allocate funds for 10,000 mental health beds and permanent supportive housing. They also want money shifted from probation to help fund the Department of Youth Development and Youth Justice Reimagined.
