Volunteers built hundreds of bikes in South L.A. that will be gifted to kids in the community for Christmas.

KNX News’ Margaret Carrero spoke to – and helped – volunteers at this community event. Fernando, a community member from Long Beach, said if you ride a bike, you’ll be happy.

“It's a sense of freedom,” another volunteer said. “You know, like you can travel, get around town, go see your friend.”

Firefighters, church members, people from local car clubs, and more all volunteered to make this event happen. The bikes were purchased by the office of Councilmember Heather Hutt to be distributed to 10th district residents from ages six to 18. Hutt said the goal is for kids to get outside.

“We have a serious problem with young people with obesity and diabetes,” Hutt said. “This should help people get outside and exercise.”

Most of the bikes have already been reserved for local kids through churches, schools and nonprofits, but some will be available for walk-ups at the Obama Sports Complex at 11 a.m. on Dec. 23. Helmets will also be given out.
