COMPTON, Calif. (KNX) — Compton’s Artesia bridge has been closed down for about two years now, unable to support traffic following a major fire in December 2020. City officials say the fixes could require tens of millions of dollars, and they’re requesting $30 million from the federal government.
“We are requesting a total of $30 million to be able to repair and reopen this bridge to our residents and our neighbors,” said Compton Mayor Emma Sharif.

“This bridge is vital for our residents, commuters and businesses between the 91 Freeway, Port of Long Beach, and City.”
Sharif is leading the charge to get the funds needed to fix the bridge’s infrastructure. She said the money would come from the federal government’s $1 trillion investment bill that is slated to be used for roads and bridges and other projects.
“More than $4 billion is headed California’s way for bridge repairs and replacements as part of the federal infrastructure bill that was approved last year,” Sharif said.
“We need to ensure that funds from the legislation are allocated to the Artesia Bridge.”
Sharif urged federal officials and community members to understand that the closure of the block-long bridge cuts off easy access through Compton, especially for truckers leaving the port of Long Beach.
