On Friday, LAPD Chief Michel Moore announced he was retiring.
In an interview with KNX News Chief Correspondent Charles Feldman, Moore said it was time to focus on his family.
“My family is my center and I haven't always demonstrated that well and we're good. We have our health and we have a bright future and I want to take that step forward,” he said. “And I think I'm leaving the department at a time where that can be done without jeopardizing a department that I love.”
So who will replace Chief Moore and could it be a woman?
Former L.A. City Councilman and current LAPD reserve officer Joe Buscaino told KNX News’ Jon Baird it could be time for the city to have its first female police chief.
“I often ask myself, how can a world-class diverse police department not have a qualified woman to lead it,” he said. “You're seeing these other major cities have women-led police departments.”
He suggested a couple of female candidates who are already with the LAPD could be qualified for the job.
“Internally, you're gonna find Emada Tingirides, who actually was my former partner. We were senior lead officers together,” he said. “Ruby Flores is a potential candidate as well who leads the Women's Police Officers Association.”
Buscaino added that it could be months before a police chief is named.
Moore will retire from the LAPD at the end of February.
