An Altadena couple who lost their home in the Eaton Fire got a brand new home on Friday.
When Ken and Carol Wood’s home was destroyed, they weren’t sure what was going to happen next.
“We saw that everything was gone,” Ken told KNX News’ Jon Baird. “We didn't know. We had hoped that we would be back, but we didn't know if we could, and we never thought it would be like this.”
The new home, built by the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity and volunteers, is on the same property as the old house. But now, the new house comes with an accessory dwelling unit.
L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger was among those who volunteered during the rebuilding effort.
“We volunteered up here and spent the day hitting nails and doing all the good stuff, but it was important for us to really give back and Habitat for Humanity is all about that,” she said. “So we as a team, the Barger team, put together a bunch of volunteers to come up here and help. But driving up here today and looking around, I'm committed every day, but I come up here and see the work being done. It just pushes me even harder to continue to fight the fight for the survivors who want to rebuild, who are still facing challenges.”
Faith Mellinger with San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity told Baird that more homes are on the way.
“We have nine under construction, and we have about 26 more in permit stages,” she said.
She said they hope to eventually build 10-20 homes a month for residents who lost their homes and were uninsured or underinsured.
