LONG BEACH, Calif. (KNX) — Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has charged two Long Beach police officers with lying about an arrest three years ago.

Dedier Reyes, 38, and David Salcedo, 28, are facing one count each of filing a false report and falsifying a public record in connection to an arrest they made on Feb. 15, 2018, according to Gascón’s office.

On that night, Reyes and Salcedo detained two men outside of a taqueria while on patrol and found a bag with a loaded handgun inside, according to a news release.

The officers are accused of lying about how the gun was recovered, which resulted in the wrong person being arrested and briefly held in custody, the release said.

“Law enforcement officers have a legal and moral obligation to the people they serve to always tell the truth,” Gascón said. “The failure of a sworn peace officer to tell the truth can result in an innocent person losing their freedom.”

Reyes also faces one count of perjury, the release said. Arraignment will be scheduled for a later date.

The Long Beach Police Department told the Long Beach Post it suspended the officers after it learned of the D.A.’s intention to charge the officers. The case remains under investigation by the department.
