LOS ANGELES (KNX) - While the Hollywood writers’ strike continues into its third week, the Directors Guild of America is trying to hammer out a new contract of its own with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

The DGA is asking for higher salaries, improvements to its health and pension plans, better residuals for streaming shows, and greater creative autonomy.

Before the talks began last week, the DGA negotiating committee told members in a video message that they might be in for a long fight.

“We know there will be conflict. The battle will test us. But we won’t rest until we win a strong contact today that builds a bridge to continued DGA prosperity into the future,’ committee co-chair Todd Holland said.

Both sides have imposed a media blackout during the negotiations, but Variety reports that the talks are proceeding calmly and “in a collaborative way.”

The DGA’s current contract expires on June 30. The actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, will also begin contract negotiations with the AMPTP on June 7. Both unions have signaled support for the WGA strike.

If the DGA strikes a deal, it could help break the impasse between the producers and striking writers.
