The symptoms are bouts of vomiting, stomach pain, and the peculiar desire to take a hot shower or bath to get rid of the nausea.

Cedar Sinai ER Medical Director Doctor Sam Torbati tells KNX News' Emily Valdez that it's called cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome and appears to be the result of a genetic intolerance to the plant.

"We have seen cases go up, and unfortunately, we're also seeing people who have it, who've been told that they probably have it, who seem to be in denial," said Torbati.

Symptoms vary in intensity, with the more severe cases marked by continued vomiting that can become extremely dehydrating, sending the sufferer into shock.

"They can develop problems with their electrolytes; their kidneys can start to have dysfunction," Torbati said.

According to the doctor, the only cure is to quit using cannabis.
