LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Los Angeles Dodgers placed pitcher Tony Gonsolin on the injured list today due to a right forearm strain, hours before he was scheduled to pitch against the Miami Marlins and attempt to become Major League Baseball's first 17-game winner of 2022.

The Dodgers recalled fellow right-hander Michael Grove from their Oklahoma City Triple-A affiliate to replace Gonsolin.
He started in Gonsolin's place Monday in the finale of a four-game series against the Marlins in Miami.

"I felt a little tight coming out of my last outing," Gonsolin said. "I dealt with a little bit of the forearm tightness earlier this year. Thought it was going to go away in a couple of days. It just kind of lingered this time so we're going to push back and miss a couple of starts which is OK."

Gonsolin said the injury felt more like "forearm tightness." All ligament tests conducted Sunday "came out negative," Gonsolin said.

"Everything's feeling really good except a little bit of tightness," Gonsolin said.

Gonsolin said he will not throw Monday and Tuesday and reevaluate his situation Wednesday.

Gonsolin last pitched Tuesday, allowing one run and three hits over five innings in a 10-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. He threw a bullpen session as usual Friday.

"Felt a little tight coming out of that," Gonsolin said. "I did a little more modality stuff to try to calm it down. Then told (pitching coach Mark) Prior yesterday right when I got here, `Hey, this is what I'm thinking. I really want to play catch and see if I'm good to go for tomorrow.'

"We came to the conclusion that it would probably be best to skip this one and since we're doing that, might as well give it a break for whatever the IL days is so 15 days. Just give it that two-week break."

The move is retroactive to Friday. Gonsolin is eligible to be activated Sept. 10. This is the first time this season Gonsolin has been placed on the injured list and third time in his career. He was placed on the injured list twice in 2021.

Manager Dave Roberts said Gonsolin will miss a maximum of two starts.

"To make that IL move, to skip two starts didn't seem like a whole lot of cost and hopefully will reset him and get him ready for the postseason," Roberts said.

Gonsolin (16-1) shares the major league lead in victories with Houston's Justin Verlander and Atlanta's Kyle Wright.
Gonsolin is also tied for first with Verlander and Tampa Bay Rays' left-hander Shane McClanahan in fewest walks and hits per inning pitched, 0.86. His 2.10 ERA is second in MLB behind Verlander's 1.84.
