The Los Angeles County Medical-Examiner's office identified Daniel Le Shawn Welch of Long Beach as the victim. Welch's death was listed as a homicide.

The preliminary investigation revealed Welch was shot in the upper body while driving at the intersection of Bullis Road and Rosecrans Avenue and continued a short distance until crashing head-on into another vehicle on Long Beach Boulevard, sheriff's officials said. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken by paramedics to a hospital for treatment, officials said.

There was no suspect information immediately available.
