Eaton Fire survivors rally for bill stopping land grab by developers

On Monday, a rally was held in Altadena in support of SB 1090, which Eaton fire survivors say will stop the land grab by outside developers.

Standing on a large burned-out lot eyed by developers, homeowners, renters, community leaders, and local organizations urged state lawmakers to get behind the bill.

“We ask our elected leaders to continue to stand with us, to honor the work this community has done together, to pass 1090 with its amendment and the urgency clause, and to give Altadena the opportunity to lead its own recovery,” Katie Clark with the Altadena Tenants Union said.

Fire survivors say developers have been taking advantage of the disaster by buying up lots with plans to build multi-unit structures on single-family home lots. Kara, one of the survivors, says her large, burned-out lot could hold 30 houses.

“The only thing I do know is that we are sure as hell not selling it to a developer to build 30 houses,” she said.

Clark said the housing proposed by these developers “will not be affordable to tenants” and “will not be accessible to Altadena renters.”

“It will be a further engine of gentrification and displacement and push people who are already struggling further away from home,” she said.

Members of the Altadena Town Council and other fire survivors plan to be in Sacramento on Wednesday to push for the bill's passage.
